2009-06-30_ProjectGetOutdoors

Every Tuesday I volunteer at Winona’s Maplewood Townhomes.  It is called Project Get Outdoors and we cater to all youths.  Today was my program day and we were set to go fishing in the backwaters.  Many of my kids had never fished before.  We started with how to cast and bait a hook and the [...]

Today Chad and I were host to master anglers Andy Geving and Andy Nordquist.  Geving holds the current world record for Golden Redhorse of which he caught out of the Root River a few years ago.  We set out to our backwaters current for several species, Shortnose and Longnose Gar and Sauger.

Nordquist was competing in [...]

The Mississippi River sturgeon are active.
They are busy porpoising and breaking drum anglers lines. Thankfully, they take the time to give me the fin when they break. Being sturgeon, they like to jump, these particular sturgeon jump like porpoise when a standing wave rolls from the dam gates over them.
I counted five sturgeon breaks an [...]

I have a bike that I can ride to the creek instead of driving my car. Today I chose to take it up over the freeway ridge and down into the valley on the south side of it in order to hit a section of creek that is rarely fished. The drive took [...]

I got out to scout a bit today finding a creek that had no paths on the edges of the water and no other anglers about.

Stino and I decided to get out while we could and we didn’t tell our girlfriends.  We opted for the 10 – minute drive to Pickwick Creek to get the fishing in before it gets dug up by Trout Unlimited.  The creek is slated to get “habitat improvement” for the introduced exotic Brown Trout.
I [...]

2009-05-28_MississippiRiver, That Dang Stick…

That Dang stick.

Chad Wenzel and I headed to Bass Camp on the Whitman Dam on the Mississippi River to chase fish.  We were not after anything specific save the rewards of trying to catch fish.
We blew a tire on the boat trailer on Highway 61 on our way to the boat launch.  Chad decided to [...]

2009-05-22_SouthBranchWhitewaterRiver

I had planned to meet my friends Linda and Lisa at Elba this evening for an evening of Brown Trout angling on the South Branch Whitewater River.  We accessed at Lloyd’s Pasture and worked our way upstream from the camper park.
There were not a lot of bugs flying around however the Browns were busy sipping [...]

Another day, another creek, another frozen guide. I called Justin at 10.30am because I noticed that he had been scouring my website for information. I figured that he would be around at that point and ready to go fish in the sun. The high was forecasted to be 28 degrees and it [...]

Today Justin and I headed to the Whitewater System to do some scouting on some water that neither of us had fished previously.  Destination, North Branch Whitewater River.
We accessed at the last lot below the minimum maintenance road.  We covered nearly one stream mile and found few fish.  We felt better about hiking and staying comfortable.
Justin had [...]

2008-06-05_CrowSpring

Today, Stino and I made our way to Crow Spring Brook in search of Brookies.
We found none however we saw a bit of surface activity. The weather was unstable and we enjoyed our short amount of time on the water.

Today Stino called me and talked me into going for some trout. We headed to Stockton.
The fish were in their usual haunts and were taking large nymphs that were swam as emergers, caddis dries, pink labs, and flash back PT’s.
We took several dozen fish in a few hours without walking more than a mile. [...]

Today was a great day as we had six canoes and ten riders.
We launched at Rushford’s canoe landing. We parked the take out vehicle at Vinegar Ridge.
It was a nice fast paddle that took about two and a half hours to float. It featured a few pieces of a silo that was [...]

Today Bella and I hit the creek. We needed a break from selling crap at our garage sale. I shot some video and took a few photos.
The fishing was great. I caught numerous Brown and Rainbow trout on deep nymphs. The wildflowers were in full bloom including Phlox and Trillium.
