The paddle out was more than the distance we paddled to the camp site. We stayed up too late last night and it was too early to paddle. It was a sunny day. We made it to the take out. We took time for lunch at a waterfall that leaked out of a crag. This [...]

Canoeing in August. Our friend Ass is back from her stint in the Peace Corp in French Guinea, that Africa for those who don’t know. So with two dogs and two boats we headed to the North Branch Root River to paddle to Highway 16. Hatch didn’t ride in the boat the first 10 miles. [...]

What a way to spend a weekend with some college buddies than to get a flotilla of canoes to go down the Root River? None. Today was day two. We were on the way out. We had a great night and great paddle yesterday while covering 15 miles of river. The crags were awesome and [...]

Boundary Waters 2008.

After a bit of time spent fanagling with my photo album scripts I got it to work again. Here are the photos from the week spent in the North Woods where we traveled over 20 miles by canoe and paddle and canoe and sail. I will have a story to go with the photos soon.

Today I talked Shell into steering the canoe as I fished for some bass. We put in at Mud Lake, east of Winona. It is a spring fed lake full of fish. We were treated to a wonderful sunset. The fishing was great. Lots of medium sized bass for the dinner table. The Flag Iris [...]

Today was a great day as we had six canoes and ten riders. We launched at Rushford’s canoe landing. We parked the take out vehicle at Vinegar Ridge. It was a nice fast paddle that took about two and a half hours to float. It featured a few pieces of a silo that was leftover [...]

Today we deeped up in two new Wenonoah Norfolk canoes with three paddles combined. We put in just below Minnesota City on Garvin Brook. Our access was not really an access. Mikey, Al, Conor, and I made due. This section of Garvin Brook had been ravished by floods in August of 2007. The bulk of [...]

Today we are going fishing. We are using our canoes to get to the honey holes. Our first stop was Mertes Slough. The river has been dropping significantly over the past few days which, according to the old timers, means that fishing should pick up. We caught no fish here. We found minnows, carp, and [...]

2008-05-17_ZumbroRiver

Today we had ten to hit the river. For some, it was our second day this week on the water in a canoe. Our destination was the Zumbro River between Theilman and the Kruger Recreation Area. I am excited to say that we found a patch of blooming Trillium alongside the road to the launch [...]

2008-05-16_AghamingPark

Today we had four boats, eight people, and a dog. We launched at the St. Charles boat landing and shot directly across the channel to Aghaming Park. The current was swift and the wind stiff however we all made it across the river safely. The backwaters were lovely and full of current and mosquitos. We [...]

Sunday. Two cars, two boats, four people and three life jackets; We gathered on the west side of town waiting on an additional life jacket. Between the four of us, Mikey, Nate, Amy J, and myself, we have the combined adventure of a herd of Mountain Goats. None of us had the balls to run [...]
