Fillmore County

The Opener – Jan 1, 2012.

A Minnesota Winter Rainbow.

A Minnesota Winter Rainbow. Jan 1 has turned into a tradition.  I have spent the last four openers angling with my friend Justin.  In 2009 we began with a death hike through the bluff side in eastern Fillmore County.  Since then we have had a spot that we frequent that is out of the wind. [...]

2011 Stream Trout Winter Opener

1989 Winona Daily News Article

My angling season officially began Jan 1, 2011, as has been my tradition for eight seasons. I have learned numerous new winter angling skills in the last eight seasons which compliment my 22 previous winter trout seasons. These skills have afforded me the pleasure of successfully and comfortably angling for stream trout in freezing temperatures. [...]

To those of you who are avid trout anglers and thought that this was an all trout post: The names Browns and Bows don’t just refer to two of the three species of fish that are the predominate exotic biomass in southeast Minnesota’s Driftless Areacreeks. Shawn and I had fun catching sturgeon in the shade [...]

This is the first episode for the 2010 season of On The Water. Filmed entirely in southeast Minnesota. Today Justin and I set out to catch some fish. he had never fished Trout Run before so I took him to a spot where, more times than not, I traditionally caught large native Creek Chubs. This section of stream went under the knife a few years back. In the process of “habitat restoration” it [...]

Today the hunt to handle George is in its eighth month.  I have nothing to report save for I did not see this extraordinarily large in stream Brown Trout today.  The grass in the pool that she lives is thick and I hope that she was in there instead of facing a trophy hunters fate. [...]

I had to walk the dogs as they were going crazy in the house.  I decided to take them to the forest for a romp while I could hunt mushrooms.  We headed down into Filmore County to get on a piece of state forest.   There is a trout stream on this patch of [...]

About this time every year Eagle Cliff campground gets crowded with anglers. Some would describe them as Roughfishers, others as non-traditional anglers, but to us we are native species anglers. As a walleye or smallmouth bass is native to some parts of our state redhorse and suckers have a wider native range. The Roughfish round-up [...]

The world record Golden Redhorse was caught in the Root River in 2007 by Andy Geving. In this video I target Golden Redhorse with crawlers in a plunge pool. Golden Redhorse are often incorrectly identified by anglers. Most anglers accept them as carp. In southeast Minnesota most call them suckers. Only a keen few can [...]

A master angler catches fish for mental health reasons. Typically the larger the fish the more mental health one gains. This time of the year in SE Minnesota’s Root River an angler can catch 40 fish over two pounds in one day. Of course this angler must be able. This video shows a few tricks [...]

Each spring brings neat things to SE Minnesota. There are the hatching mayflies, flying caddis, blooming wildflowers, slurping trout and the annual run of Redhorse on the Root River. Watch this video and see what Minnesota’s World Class Root River has to offer anglers in late April.

Today Mikey and I put the canoe in at Lanesboro and paddled down to the take out on HIghway 16. We were seeking redhorse and suckers however ended up with trout and bass. The water is extremely low and it required us to pull the canoe through several riffles.

Today Eric and I fished the Root looking for Suckers and Redhorse. We found a few White suckers anda lot of Brown Trout.

After a long week at school and life there is nothing finer than being in the forest with circling Eagles, chirping Nuthatch, flying Kingfishers, dabbling Wood Ducks, slurping Trout, flying Midge, crawling Spiders, and friends. We spent the day in our usual Winter haunt as we have gotten to know the fish a bit better. [...]
