St. Croix River swing bridge.

The St. Croix border water Walleye opener happens a week before the rest of the state opens for the species. Dad and I had the itch to get on some Walleye. Even though I can fish Walleye year round on the Mississippi River in Winona we decided that a metro area angling day would suit us. I called Jim and talked him into hitting the river with us.

Jim lives just ten minutes from the Croix and has fished it numerous times.

We launched in Hudson at 5.30am and headed for the swing bridge. We caught smallmouth, freshwater drum, channel catfish and walleye drifting crawlers along the bottom in swift current.

The day was nice as Dad and I explored a new river and Jim filled us with stories of successful fishing outings on this river.

It was a great day!
