Today I returned to my favorite spot to hunt morels. I brought my dogs with today. They love to climb the crag and to run through the Oak, Elm, Hickory, and Maple forest that is thick with ferns. I have been taking my dogs Mushroom Hunting because I have read numerous stories that would lead [...]

Today Bella and I hit the creek. We needed a break from selling crap at our garage sale. I shot some video and took a few photos. The fishing was great. I caught numerous Brown and Rainbow trout on deep nymphs. The wildflowers were in full bloom including Phlox and Trillium.

2008-05-23_MushroomHunting

Instead of lunch I took a hike in search of morels. I had a phone call in the morning from some of my hunting friends that said today was the day. I had a set of adventure clothes in my car and hit the road to climb a bluff to find some morels. I found [...]

2008-05-21_GarvinBrook

Today we deeped up in two new Wenonoah Norfolk canoes with three paddles combined. We put in just below Minnesota City on Garvin Brook. Our access was not really an access. Mikey, Al, Conor, and I made due. This section of Garvin Brook had been ravished by floods in August of 2007. The bulk of [...]

2008-05-19_AghamingPark

Today I fished the backwaters in search of Carp and Buffalo. I noticed a new sign for the park at the entrance. It began to rain heavily when I got my rods set. The pouring rain discouraged me from fishing very long. I left after 15 minutes.

Today we are going fishing. We are using our canoes to get to the honey holes. Our first stop was Mertes Slough. The river has been dropping significantly over the past few days which, according to the old timers, means that fishing should pick up. We caught no fish here. We found minnows, carp, and [...]

2008-05-17_ZumbroRiver

Today we had ten to hit the river. For some, it was our second day this week on the water in a canoe. Our destination was the Zumbro River between Theilman and the Kruger Recreation Area. I am excited to say that we found a patch of blooming Trillium alongside the road to the launch [...]

Contest Entries?

I have been digging through my photos from 2007 and pulled these two up last night. I am interested to see how they do amongst the myriad of image contest on message boards and forums throughout the country.

2008-05-16_AghamingPark

Today we had four boats, eight people, and a dog. We launched at the St. Charles boat landing and shot directly across the channel to Aghaming Park. The current was swift and the wind stiff however we all made it across the river safely. The backwaters were lovely and full of current and mosquitos. We [...]

2008-05-15_Morel Hunting

I ended up with four in my car today, including myself. We climbed from the valley to the ridge searching for Morels through the Elms and found none. The Wild Colmbine are now staring to bloom. I found more Shooting Star’s and Jack-in-the-Pulpit. Solomon’s Seal is starting to bud. It should be blooming within the [...]

2004 Original Guide Rate Page

In 2004 I started my guide service. At that time it was Yellow Dog Adventures. I aptly named my service after my dog. Hatch is a Yellow Lab. Soon thereafter a more organized guide service registered the name Yellow Dog Fly Fishing Adventures and I changed mine to SershenBros. Below is the original guide service [...]

Mikey has the bug. He was ready to take the 8-weight out and hook more Horse. We headed to the bridge on Garvin Brook and were into fish immediately. My deal was to get some video of me catching a Shorthead and a Silver. We finished filming in less than 20 minutes. Mikey took over [...]

2008-05-13_GarvinBrook

Today Mikey and I decided that we could catch more Redhorse in Minnesota City. We also had a plan to hook up with Master Baiter from River Angling to find a decent carp and buffalo spot. I phoned Brad to let him know we would be in our usual haunt. We met up in Minnesota [...]

2008-05-12_Garvin Brook

Yesterday I got a report from a fishing buddy that was celebrating Mother’s Day with his girlfriend’s parents in Minnesota City. They live on Garvin Brook. There are Redhorse in the riffles that the flood of 2007 created. In my five years of living in Winona I have never found Horse in Garvin Brook. The [...]

2008-05-09_Roughfish Roundup

My round-up started with the float. I met the crew at Eagle Cliff Campground. A bunch of us loaded the boats onto a few cars and headed to Lanesboro to put-in. We had originally planned on floating the North Branch Root River however ended up on the South Branch. The water was stained but at [...]

2008-05-08_MorelHunting

Nate, Shell, and I decided that today would be a good day to climb a bluff, cross the ridge, and head down the south slope searching for Elm trees and Morel Mushrooms. We found the Elm’s however didn’t find any Morels. The climb to the ridge was about 500-feet from the bottom of the valley [...]

2008-05-07_WinonaSpillway

Bella and I found the time to get out to the spillway for a bit today. I spotted a school of three football shaped eight pound Commons and a 25-inch Gar in the backwater timber today n my way to the fishing hole. I lost two slip sinker rigs tonight. I changed and relined the [...]

2008-05-06_NightCrawlers

It is raining in Winona however it is still warm enough to wear sandals and shorts. I harvested 12 dozen crawlers in 30 minutes at Lake Park. I collected three dozen more in the alley in five minutes when the dogs were outside.

2008-05-05_Holzinger Trails

Today I convinced four of my friends that it would be a great day to climb up and down a bluff. I lured them with the lore of Morel Mushroom hunting. We filled the Subaru with five people and three dogs and made our way to Holzinger Lodge. We hiked around the north side of [...]

2008.05.04Redhorse on a Sunday afternoon.

I talked a few of my friends into splitting gas and heading to the Root with the lure of catching 20 – inch fish. We made it out of Winona at 2.00pm after increasing our crawler count to six dozen. We stopped at the Peterson canoe landing to find a chalky brown stream. We stopped [...]

Open Gates.

I got an afternoon report that led me to believe that the gates of the dam in Alma had been opened to accommodate the volume of water that was in the banks of the big river. Bella and I headed to the spillway to try and catch some dinner. We ended up catching several medium [...]
